I Spy Dani

Dani vs. The World

Odd Engrish!

August27

During our month of orientation, the 12 of us were tasked with an interesting project.  We were to go around the Kaohsiung and document all of the weird English that appeared on street signs, shirts, restaurants, logos, etc.  What we came up with was rather amusing.  We learned a few rather important cross-linguistic things.

For one thing, letters are important and very essential to a word and its meaning.  One small mistake can be quite dangerous.

If you are ever in need of some below-the-belt medical care, find your way over to the PUBIC HEALTH CENTER!

So close....yet not quite.

So close...but not quite there yet

Found on a T-shirt. I guess they thought some letters are more important to have than others?

Maybe they compensate for the fact that n+consonant is really hard to pronounce by adding it wherever they can

A surprisingly decipherable ode to McDonalds. Priceless.

    Hi Dani,

This is Dale from Taipei. I’m enjoying reading about your adventures in Kaohsiung. Hope you all are having a good time.

I was wondering if I could use your photos from this post (credited and linked back to you) for a website I (try to) update with head-scratching English from around Taiwan.

Let me know if it’s ok!

    Bests,

    Dale

If you receive papers like that one, it is your patriotic duty to take a picture and put it up on the Internet.
